Sometime while I was at RIT, I think we are talking like 2004 or 2005ish I heard about Night Watch – this crazy urban-fantasy-Russian movie that was supposed to be really amazing. And so I went with some people (anyone remember who? I can only assume Ben and others) when it came to the Little.
I did really enjoy it (I think we all did), it was quite strange/new/different, and I was excited to think this was only the first in a trilogy of movies. Well 2006 rolled around, Day Watch came out, eventually came out in America, and eventually got netflixed into my apartment.
On Tuesday it “snowed a lot” in Pittsburgh and so lots of things were cancelled unnecessarily. But this means we spent our evening baking cookies (cookies picture above are not from discussed movies) and re-watching Night Watch, followed by Day Watch.
Now while the film is good – I did it enjoy it – I think I had higher hopes. It was awkwardly conclusive for the second of a trilogy (the third movie tentatively titled Twilight Watch is slated for 2009) and not as visually original as the first, but it was still pretty intense.
As for what to expect from the concluding chapter of the films, well it is hard to say. After some quick internet research Elliot and I learned that although the Watch tetralogy is four books from Russian novelist Sergei Lukyanenko, the first film is only the first segment of the first novel, and the second film is segments two and three of the first novel shown in parallel (which explains the disjoint double conclusion of the film).
Though I think the real result of our snow-day baking and russian movie fest is that we have decided it is time to order the novels (in English) and give them a read.

Night Watch was definitely a lot better than Day Watch. Did you see the version of Night Watch with the crazy subtitles? That was my favorite part.
